May FLY OF THE MONTH: Meat Whistle

With most of our trout fisheries blown out due to high water, it is now time for a bass fly to take center stage. The Meat Whistle is a well-known pattern when targeting bass, and for good reason. Tied on a large jig style hook, and heavily weighted at the head, this fly provides a definite jig action underwater with every retrieve. This up and down motion underwater can replicate an injured or dying fish, which will attract any hungry bass. Furthermore, specifically during this time of the year, the Meat Whistle will slam the water and immediately dive into the territory of a nesting bass. The bass then will strike out of aggression to kill anything coming in its territory. So if you are heading out for bass this month, don’t go without a light and dark colored Meat Whistle.
