Situated on the border of Idaho and Nevada,
Duck Valley Indian Reservation is home to
three desert reservoirs that provide some
of southern Idaho's most reliable spring and
early summer fishing. Mountain View, Lake
Billy Shaw, and Sheep Creek reservoirs are
home to fast growing rainbow trout and consistently
good fishing. The reservoirs are about 2 1/2
hours south of Boise and can be reached by
taking I-84 east to Mountain Home, then heading
south on State Route 51 to Duck Valley.

This
655 acre reservoir is the most popular of
the three and the only one in Idaho. The reservoir's
many coves offer protection from the desert
winds that often buffet this area and provide
great fishing against shoreline cattails and
underwater weed beds. A very good early season
fishery, the water tends to be clearer in
this reservoir when the others are muddy due
to spring run-off.

Opened in 2001, this reservoir is managed
for trophy rainbow trout. Fished both from
boat and by wading, it provides good fishing
for rainbows averaging 18 inches and some
exceeding 5 pounds. This fishery is expected
to improve as time goes by.

The largest reservoir in Duck Valley, its
usually turbid water conceals a rich aquatic
soup of insects and bait fish. Large bays
and smaller coves of extensive weed beds and
open channels winding through them provide
perfect cruising lanes for trout and places
for the angler to intercept them. At nearly
800 acres when full, this reservoir is best
fished from a float tube or a boat that can
be taken in shallow water.
A
tribal fishing permit is required to fish
these waters. To fish either Mountain View
and/or Sheep Creek Reservoir will be $7.50
per day with Lake Billy Shaw costing $25.00
per day because of its trophy status. A modestly
priced camping permit is also available at
$5.00 per night. These permits are available
at Idaho Angler.
